Living in El Hierro

The areas as I see them, Luca, after years on the islands.

El Hierro is the smallest and westernmost of the seven main islands, a biosphere reserve, with the valley of El Golfo open to the ocean, natural lava pools and the seabeds off La Restinga loved by divers. It's a long way from everywhere, and the people who live here consider that its main quality.

Homes are few, often rural, and the market is small: people buy here as a lifestyle choice, not as a tourist investment. Valverde is the capital, up on the plateau, while La Frontera and El Golfo are the milder, more cultivated part of the island.

Numbers and municipalities come from public sources; the rest is my own experience. If an area catches your eye, message me and I'll tell you about it in person.

The areas

  • La Frontera (El Golfo, Tigaday)
  • Valverde
  • El Pinar (La Restinga)

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a home here without being a resident in Spain?

Yes. You can buy without being resident in Spain: you need a NIE (foreigner identification number), a Spanish bank account and a notary for the deed. In the buying guide you'll find the steps and the taxes, with official sources.

What happens if there's no listing on this island right now?

Our archive grows every week, partly thanks to our partner agencies on the islands. And if the right home isn't here today, we look for it for you, including homes that aren't in public listings, free for buyers: tell us what you're looking for with ‘Chat with Inmobilio’ in the ‘Property finder’ box at the end of the listings.

Can you view the property on my behalf?

Yes. If you are not on the island, someone from the agency or our local partner does the viewing, sends you extra photos and video, and gets back to you in English; then it's up to you to decide whether to come and see it in person.
